YUM! I really really like it.
Here's the scoop on the "Natural" thing. 100% Whole grain, 100% "Natural", No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, 0 Transfat, Good Source of Fiber.
Ingredients: Popping Corn, Palm Oil, Salt, Natural Flavor, Mixed Tocopherols (for freshness). Number one on the "Natural" scale...the corn is neither organic, nor non GMO. Corn, in general in our country is among the most genetically modified of our food sources. Palm Oil in this case is also not organic or non GMO and palm oil tends to be a lower quality oil. Salt vs sea salt. Natural flavor, can honestly be just about anything (even animal sources or chemical sources). Mixed Tocopherols are sort of a vitamin E like compound that can retard spoilage...like a preservative. Generally thought of as safe. Then there are the caustic chemicals and fumes from the heated bag, the heating pad inside the bag and questions about the health of microwave use. Sorry to be a Debbi Downer. But when I eat something, I like to be educated and aware. It doesn't mean I won't choose to eat it ever, but I will probably not buy this product again.
I think I'll look around for a good hot air popper and buy some organic popping corn.
But DAMN, this stuff is tasty. That's the slipper slope right?
As for nutritional information, don't ever confuse "Natural" with low calorie unless you confirm that through the label. One serving of this stuff is 220 calories and 15 grams of fat, some of it saturated.
Here's that nutritional information (unless my copy/paste maneuver fails):

Did I mention this stuff is additively good? Life is all about choices. Just make your choices with your eyes open and with reasonable care and balance.
Come up with something all organic, and all non GMO Orville, and then send me a case of it to review! YUM!

Good review, and I agree that it's good to be educated, although I think I will succumb to the deliciousness, and purchase again.
ReplyDeleteOne correction, based on the box I have in hand - it is 190 calories per serving (which is the same as one mini-bag), popped. It is 190 calories unpopped. (Presumably the difference has to do with how much oil stays in the bag, rather than on the popcorn, after cooking, and the average amount of kernels which don't pop and aren't eaten.)
Either way, one mini-bag is a satisfying snack, so I think in this case we have a lot of "bang" for our caloric buck. 220 isn't bad, and 190 is even better.
I agree - YUM!
Interesting...I just went back to their website to look up the nutritional information for that product and it lists it as 220 calories. I believe YOU reading from your pkg vs them creating a web page where they may have used the nutritional info from another of their products....or maybe it is 190 unpopped and 220 popped (since some of that oil will go into the product).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I tried it, but will look for a healthier option. Every choice counts. I make enough bad choices as it is. Trying to reduce those to a minimal where I can.
