Book Review: The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love

Yes, I know that today's Christmas.  I should be posting something all "Peace and Goodwill towards Men".  Well what about women?  Joyful Holiday, whoever you're with, and whatever you call it, and however you celebrate it.  If it isn't a holiday where you live...then let's move on.

The Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love by Jill Conner Browne is on in a series of at least 10 books (so far) in the genera of "women & humor".  These women, keen on having fun, decided first to dress up and be in parades as exaggerated versions of beauty queens, then the books started, and now, so many people want to BE them, there is a national organization with over 6,000 chapters worldwide.

In this installment "Book of Love", Jill dishes out advise for the lovelorn covering just about everything you need to know about men, relationships, heartbreak, staying in Queenly shape etc.  At least according to the Queens rules.

In one section she talks about the importance of working out, and describes a friend of theirs (one of the queens):  "Until very recently, she moved around only enough to avoid getting bedsores."  I have no idea why I can relate to that.  OK, perhaps I do.

You learn the 5 types of men a woman must have to equal a whole good man, and a man's greatest fantasy about having a Barbie woman.  You'll find that in chapter 6.  You even get some recipes that are to die for, full-fat concoctions mandatory for emotional eating (which they fully support).  I'll give you one of them tomorrow.  I've tried it.  It rocks.  It's called "Chocolate Stuff".  There's another for Mambo Margaritas that I'm eager to try, but I need some friends first, because a pitcher of those on my own might just kill me.  One of their books is a cook book, so I bet it's included in that.

I bought two of the Queen books from a used book store.  One of them is even autographed!  I'll be passing them on to my bestie when I'm done so she can enjoy them.  Queens have to stick together and all.

I found this book to be amusing.  I can't say I was rolling on the floor laughing, because, well, you know...I'm even funnier (in my own mind).  But it's good, middle-aged woman humor and a celebration of one's royalness.  I'm guessing that after the second book, I might not truly need to read the others.  We'll see.  You can see more about Jill and the Queens in the video clip below, or via this link.  Also, use the link above to go directly to their website.

  1. I also chuckled at the Sweet Potato Queens - and agree that the humor is "middle-age" directed (though I don't really know when that happens...) I tried a few of the recipes with my buddies once. Recommend the Chocolate Stuff! Produces a "feel good."
Six thousand chapters of the queens? Amazing! It does sound like they have fun!
