The Witness (2012) by Nora Roberts was a darn good read. You know I don't say that too often.
In The Witness, Elizabeth witnesses a really big crime at a very young age. The story revolves around her trying to keep alive, ruin the bad guys and rebuild a life with a sense of safety. And yeah, it's a romance...which honestly, it didn't need to be...nor did it need a couple of sex scenes...but well, Nora Roberts does rather fall more into the romance novel category than crime fiction. So I let it slide. Nice of me, eh?
I really enjoyed the character of Elizabeth. Think of Temperance Brennan from the hit TV series Bones. She's well-educated, a genius and totally naive to social skills. Which makes her utterly endearing and more than capable as a strong female character.
I found it very entertaining.

Hmm, I may just have to try this one. I usually stay away from Nora Roberts because I know she is more of a romance novelist, and they are just not my cup of tea, but I think an exception may be in order. Next trip to the library I'll look for it.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteJust finished the book last night. I enjoyed it too, in spite of it being a romance, which is not my preferred genre. I agree it would have been a better story if they focused more on the crime aspect and less of the romance, but like you said, it's Nora Roberts bread and butter.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed in the end, would have like to see more of a confrontation in court, and would have liked them to finally realize all the ways she had destroyed them and that it was her.
I'm currently reading another I'll review soon called Hot Ice. Same thing. I enjoyed it but the romance bit made me want to puke. It was quite good without that.
